The dangers of oversharing
THERE ARE DANGERS OF OVERSHARING, SO WHAT IS OVERSHARING?
Oversharing is when you share more information than needed therefore many times we will overshare without anyone asking us.
Oversharing could be between life and or intimate partners, friends, colleagues or even family
I USED TO OVERSHARE
I used to be an open book and would share my thoughts, pain, joy and my dreams with everyone because I thought they care.
However through the years, I’ve learned that not everyone are truthful, honest and loyal. Not everyone have your best interests at heart either.
“We have learned about some people from their social media feeds way more than their families have learned from years of living with them.” – ― Mokokoma Mokhonoana
WHY DO WE OVERSHARE?
Acceptance is many times a reason for oversharing. We overshare because we think people will like and accept us more because we share so much.
Oversharing also goes hand in hand with explaining ourselves. We try to make things clear to others so that they will fully understand our reasoning.
THE DANGERS OF OVERSHARING CAN BE SCARY
There are however problems created with oversharing which could really harm and hurt you, your reputation and your relationships.
- Some people thrive on other people oversharing and will actually encourage it. They then gain information from you that could be beneficial to them maybe to hurt you in some way.
- When you put your whole life – the good, the bad and the ugly out there, you open yourself up to unwanted and unneeded criticism.
- Your private life becomes open territory with everyone having an input into your life
- It could harm your dreams when you tell everyone around you ) about this excellent new idea you have – just for them to take your idea and then make money from it.
- Oversharing could harm your family relations when you share too much. Maybe about e.g the argument you had with your husband about his lack of responsibility. You and your husband have already sorted out everything while the rest of the family are still giving their opinion on what you should have done , your idiot husband and how incompetent you are.
- Oversharing on the Internet – especially Social media could result in harassment, stalking and lack of privacy.
MY EXPERIENCE WITH OVERSHARING
I’ve had a friend of 20 years betray me by going behind my back and reveal things I’ve said in private to her about one of my family members. It resulted in a damaged family relationship.
I which I knew about the dangers of oversharing earlier in my life.
As a result of oversharing, I have since placed a guard before my mouth and keep my life as private as possible.
