Billy the miracle dog

Billy the miracle dog was taken from his home in Israel on 7 October 2023. Billy is a Cavalier King Charles spaniel – 3.5 years old. He was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz during the massacre when terrorists from Gaza slaughtered 1200 people in Israel and kidnapped more than 240 people. Among those kidnapped was Alex Dancyg who was later murdered during captivity.

Rachel Dancyg is the former wife of Alex Dancyg and the owner of Billy the dog.

Rachel lost both her former husband and her brother to the massacre and thought her beloved Billy was dead until she received the news that Billy was alive and well and on his way home. More than 400 days have passed since the massacre and Rachel got another dog -the same breed as Billy. Not to replace Billy but to ease the pain of loosing such a special companion.

Speaking to Channel 12, Aviad Shapira, a reservist who has served more than 300 days in Gaza since the start of the war, recalled the moment his unit discovered the beloved pet.

Billy heard the IDF soldiers speak in Hebrew. She ran towards them and jumped into Aviad’s arms. It seemed strange to him that such a unique dog lived in Rafah. She looked totally out of place. Most importantly she responded to Hebrew. He then took the dog and kept her at the base for 4 days before returning to Israel. Back home he took the dog to the vet and to their surprise the news came that the dog was micro chipped with the owner’s detail.
