Lessons from Ukraine. Before the war started in Ukraine, I knew very little about the country that would captivate the world. After 4 years of Full scale war this novice gained more knowledge of the war and Ukraine – the country of the sunflower.

The war between Russia and Ukraine actually started in 2014 when Russia occupied Crimea.

Shortly after the occupation of Crimea the Russians also took control of the Donbas region. 3 Million Ukrainians live under occupation. The Ukraine-Russia war is the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II resulting in thousands of refugees. The death toll of Ukrainians are estimated to be about 600 000 while the estimate of Russians killed are understood to be about 1.2 million.

Lessons from Ukraine

• Before 2014 Ukraine had a small ill equipped army and no navy.
• Ukraine struggled with large scale corruption
• Pockets of pro-Russia militias were used to destabilize the country.
• There are still many pro-Russia citizens living in Ukraine.
• Russia wants to reunite Russia with Ukraine and do not accept that Ukraine is a country separate from Russia
• Ukraine gained their independence on August 24, 1991
• Ukraine wants to join NATO and the European Union which Russia oppose.
• Under old Soviet rule Ukraine was called Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian SSR)
• Russia currently occupies 20% of Ukraine.
• President Zelensky was a comedian before he became the leader of Ukraine
• Ukraine are dependent on other countries to help them with security

Personal lessons from Ukraine

• The one with the money is the one with the power so make sure that you can pay for your own security and lifestyle. Do not waste your money.
• Keep your friends close and your enemies closer – Keep a close eye on your enemies and be prepared for any scenario.
