Silence is golden
Silence is golden
When I was younger, I wanted nothing to do with silence because I feared silence – it scared me to death when it was silent around me and for that reason I would switch on the radio or Television just to hear something. I certainly couldn’t bear the thought of having silence be with me. However now finally Silence is golden
“I’ve begun to realize that you can listen to silence and learn from it. It has a quality and a dimension all its own.” ― Chaim Potok
Fast forward to years later and I have certainly learned to finally embrace silence. My home is as an result an oasis of silence. Don’t get me wrong – I love music and will therefore play music every now and then but above all the most beautiful music is silence. The symphony of silence is something unique, calming and so healing. I no longer fear silence, I seek it, I love it.
When silence starts playing in my house, I feel close to nature and also to myself. I no longer run away from myself. Silence forces you to deal with loneliness, with anxiety, with worries and so in the silence you find your answers, your peace, and likewise your dignity, your creativity and also your strength.
Don’t fear silence
Don’t fear silence because it is the best friend you could wish for. Take a deep breath or two and become one with yourself, your soul, your heart and even more your mind. It might seem daunting at first but the more you practice it, the more you will fall in love with silence.
I leave you with the lyrics of The sound of silence by Simon and Garfunkel and feel the healing of SILENCE
Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
Do not disturb silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
“Fools, ” said I, “You do not know
Silence, like a cancer, grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells, of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, “The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls”
And whispered in the sounds of silence
