Different types of single parents

Different types of single parents in the 21st century are now more common than the traditional two parent families. When I grew up in a single parent family, it was still a strange thing to others. Most children had a Mom and a Dad. Nowadays there are many types of parents.

Different types of single parents

Back in the day single parents were mostly a Mom or a Dad whose spouses have died. Divorce wasn’t as acceptable then as it is now however you would find divorced single parents as well. There are however more types of single parents nowadays.

Widow and Widower

Becoming a single parent through death means that you had no choice in the matter. While they are still considered the original single parents because of the death of their spouses, they are no longer the majority group.

Divorced

This group are now the majority of single parents because of the high divorce rate in the world. They are men and women raising kids by their selves being divorced from a heterosexual marriage.

LGBT single parents

In this group people of the same sex divorced their parents or alternatively became single parents through the death of their respective partners.

By choice

This group are single men and women who either do not have partners or who chose not to have children through the traditional way. They mostly adopt children or make use of a surrogate. Some even choose artificial insemination to become a parent.
