Act your age

Right through my life, I heard the dreadful words:
“Please act your age” .

First of all. I wasn’t out there drinking and behaving bad, nor was I smooching guys who could be my children. However, my circle of friends were very conservative (maybe closet case conservative).

My children got very embarrassed by the slightest bit of acting out of the “normal” whether it be my clothing or singing in the car.

I tried to act my age

I tried my best to act my age because I did not want to upset or embarrass anyone. The true me was out there, hiding behind a fake smile, living an inauthentic life to please everyone out there. In all of this I was denying myself the happiness of being me.

The authentic Amanda is still kind, gentle and care about others but I love dressing up in colors that don’t match. I also like my natural hair which is more white than gray. Furthermore, I wear flowers in my hair and headbands while laughing at silly jokes.

I call it quits

Coming from a traditional Christian background, I was expected to live in a certain way.

After being diagnosed with Achalasia (a blog post for another day) and facing the dreaded empty nest , I finally decided to take a break from everything and explore other things like Buddism, Meditation, Yoga, Taichi and lots of reading.

Then I did the eat, pray, love thing – only I didn’t have the money to travel anywhere. I made my home my own private retreat where I spend time with Myself.

I finally found myself again and after turning 50, I no longer care about what others think about me, my clothes, hair or my preferred lifestyle.

Amanda have no desire to be a drunk, party or hangout in clubs and pubs. One night stands is not my thing and I don’t harm or hurt anyone. Some people will make comments about my clothes (the colors don’t match or hair (you must dye your hair or you look like a child with flowers in your hair) and then I just tell them: This is my life, my hair and my clothes. This is what I like and then offer them some of my home brewed tea which is rather lovely and delicious. – end of story.
